What is the current state of Notre-Dame de Paris?

The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, a symbol of French history and architecture, was severely damaged by a fire in 2019, prompting a global mobilization for its reconstruction. Since then, significant efforts have been underway to restore this iconic landmark.

As of January 16, 2024, the restoration work of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is progressing well. The spire, which had been destroyed in the fire on April 15, 2019, was rebuilt and installed on the cathedral's roof on April 16, 2023. The choir's framework, which had also been destroyed in the fire, was completed on January 12, 2024.

Restoration work is ongoing on other parts of the cathedral, including the vaults, stained glass windows, and sculptures. The reopening of the cathedral to the public is scheduled for December 8, 2024.

Here is an overview of the main works that have been carried out over the past few years:

  • The spire: The new spire of Notre-Dame was designed by the French architect Philippe Villeneuve. It is made of oak and copper, and it is covered with a layer of gold leaf.

  • The framework: The new framework of the choir was constructed using oak and chestnut. It consists of 1,300 pieces, with 1,000 of them being handcrafted by artisans.

  • The vaults: The vaults of the nave and choir are currently undergoing restoration. They are made of limestone and were severely damaged by the fire.

  • The stained glass windows: The cathedral's stained glass windows are undergoing cleaning and restoration. They were created during the 14th and 15th centuries and are considered masterpieces of Gothic art.

  • The sculptures : The cathedral's sculptures, depicting scenes from the Bible and French history, are undergoing restoration. They were created during the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries and are also considered masterpieces of Gothic art.
